Ereshkigal

Ereshkigal
In Mesopotamian mythology, the goddess who ruled the Land of No Return (the Underworld). Ereshkigal was the older sister of Inanna (or Ishtar), goddess of love and sexual passion, of whom Ereshkigal was very jealous because she was unable to find either love or sex. As told in the epic poem The Descent ofInanna, when Inanna tried to enter the Underworld, Ereshkigal slew her. Fortunately for Inanna, some other gods revived her. Sometime in the early second millennium b.c., the Old Babylonian period, a myth developed in which Ereshkigal agreed to share her authority over the Land of No Return with Nergal, a god associated with war and pestilence.
